Who makes the beads and bracelets?

The recycled paper beads are made in Southern, Kenya by an amazing group of Masai women. They string them into necklaces that we purchase and bring back to the states. We then take the beads and hold stringing parties with local middle and high school clubs as well as in home stringing parties. They are tied into bracelets and then sold in schools, at local community events, as well as online, here. All the labor to put them together is 100% volunteered time! If you are interested in helping out, please let us know. Read more about the process here

Where do the names for the limited edition bracelets come from?

That is a great question! We have chosen to name the limited edition multi-colored bracelets after the women who make them. They are beautiful, unique, and there will never be another bracelet like them...just like the amazing Masai women who make them are beautiful, unique and there are no others like them.

What materials are the beads made from?

The beads are made from actual recycled paper! The Masai women collect magazines and other sources of paper to use. They cut them into long triangle-shaped strips and then roll them, glue them, dye them, and finally apply a clear coat to seal all that beauty in! It is quite an amazing process to see! It ends up creating a rainbow of gorgeous colors perfect for stacking into beautiful combinations! Think school, college, sorority, and sports color combos!

What do you mean by "the bracelets provide 200,000 gallons of clean water"?

When you purchase a bracelet, 100% of the profit goes back into our Clean Water Program and provides water filters to the people of Kenya. Each filter can produce 1,000,000 gallons of clean water which will support up to 25 people. The cost of the filter is $65.00, and each bracelet provides 1/5 of that cost. Therefore JUST ONE bracelet is able to provide 200,000 gallons of clean water. Changing the world isn’t so hard after all! If you would like to donate money to purchase a filter or two, click here.

Why all the concern over clean water?

There are over 44 million people living in Kenya, of which almost 18 million (43 percent) do not have access to clean water. A true water crisis. Over 3,100 children die every year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation in Kenya.

It has been reported that ten percent of the global disease burden could be prevented by improving water supply, hygiene, sanitation and through proper water management. In Kenya, due to lack of access to water and sanitation, diarrhea is second to pneumonia in deaths in children under five years of age (excluding neo-natal) and water, sanitation and hygiene related illnesses and conditions are the number one cause of hospitalization in children under age five. That is why we do what we do! Will you help us?

Are the Just One Africa bracelets waterproof?

As with most jewelry, the Just One Africa bracelets will last longer if you kept them out of the water. They will not be harmed by a splash or two, but do not put them underwater to prevent the possibility of the paper beads soaking up water and expanding.

How can I clean the bracelet?

All that is needed is a simple wipe down with a damp cloth.
