Frequently Asked Questions

What is Just One Africa?

We are community leaders who, inspire others to live intentional and meaningful lives.

Just One Africa is a non-profit 501(c)3 working in Kenya, but we are based in North Atlanta. OUR PASSION IS PEOPLE!

We partner with local leaders in Kenya to create sustainable solutions for orphans and vulnerable children by addressing the clean water crisis and creating hope through care, education, and community development.

Just One Africa seeks to inspire the individual to affect change resulting in thriving communities with access to clean water and with the capability to provide for their basic needs.

Social Change at Home

In addition to our online store, we offer multiple ways for individuals, schools, organizations, and companies in the United States to get involved.

Our programs allow you to learn about global poverty issues, promote social justice and fair trade, and improve communities in need around the world. Contact us for more info.

Do we sell Fair Trade Products?

Just One Africa offers a collection of fair trade products which are handmade by Masai women artisans in Kenya. We support sustainable community development by ensuring that the women making our products are paid a price they set.

We make it easy for you to improve women’s lives around the world and shop responsibly through our online store and fundraising programs. By choosing to purchase from our community, you’re helping to eradicate poverty, promote social justice and provide clean, safe water to those in need.

Why do we sell the items we sell?

We sell recycled paper bracelets as a means of bringing sustainable income to the Masai women artisans who create the beads so they can care for their children and others at risk. 100% of the profits of the bracelets go back into our clean water program.

The purchase of a single bracelet provides 200,000 gallons of clean water and 5 bracelets provide 1 million gallons! That is pretty awesome, right? The profit from 5 bracelets will provide one water filter to a family in need. While the women are busy beading, our local leaders spend time sharing a number of important health, family life, and educational-based topics with them.

Who doesn't love a TRIPLE give back? All of a sudden changing the world doesn't seem too hard! You can be a part of it all.

Who makes the beads and bracelets?

The recycled paper beads are made in Southern, Kenya by an amazing group of Masai women. They string them into necklaces that we purchase and bring back to the states. We then take the beads and hold stringing parties with local middle and high school clubs as well as in home stringing parties. They are tied into bracelets and then sold in schools, at local community events, as well as online, here. All the labor to put them together is 100% volunteered time! If you are interested in helping out, please let us know. Read more about the process on our Beads for Water page.

Where do the names for the limited edition bracelets come from?

That is a great question! We have chosen to name the limited edition multi-colored bracelets after the women who make them. They are beautiful, unique, and there will never be another bracelet like them...just like the amazing Masai women who make them are beautiful, unique and there are no others like them.

What materials are the beads made from?

The beads are made from actual recycled paper! The Masai women collect magazines and other sources of paper to use. They cut them into long triangle-shaped strips and then roll them, glue them, dye them, and finally apply a clear coat to seal all that beauty in! It is quite an amazing process to see! It ends up creating a rainbow of gorgeous colors perfect for stacking into beautiful combinations! Think school, college, sorority, and sports color combos!

What do you mean by "the bracelets provide 200,000 gallons of clean water"?

When you purchase a bracelet, 100% of the profit goes back into our Clean Water Program and provides water filters to the people of Kenya. Each filter can produce up to 1,000,000 gallons of clean water which can support up to 25 people. The cost of the filter is $65.00, and each bracelet provides 1/5 of that cost. Therefore JUST ONE bracelet is able to provide 200,000 gallons of clean water. Changing the world isn’t so hard after all! If you would like to donate money to purchase a filter or two, click here.

Why all the concern over clean water?

There are over 44 million people living in Kenya, of which almost 18 million (43 percent) do not have access to clean water. A true water crisis. Over 3,100 children die every year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation in Kenya.

It has been reported that ten percent of the global disease burden could be prevented by improving water supply, hygiene, sanitation and through proper water management. In Kenya, due to lack of access to water and sanitation, diarrhea is second to pneumonia in deaths in children under five years of age (excluding neo-natal) and water, sanitation and hygiene related illnesses and conditions are the number one cause of hospitalization in children under age five. Read more about the the water issues in Kenya on our Clean Water page.

That is why we do what we do! Will you help us?

How much are you paying the Artisans?

The Kenyan artisans are not our employees, we paying them per piece based on the price they set for us, This gives them the freedom to keep the work with other clients and decide their own cost and value.

How can I clean the bracelet?

Just wipe the beads with a damp cloth.

Are you going to offer any other colors?

Yes! We will be releasing other colors. If you “like” our Facebook page, you will be one of the first to find out! Or you can choose to sign up for our newsletter, at the bottom of the page, and get new product info that way. Some of the colors will be limited edition so they are first come, first serve! Are the Just One Africa bracelets waterproof?

As with most jewelry, the Just One Africa bracelets will last longer if you kept them out of the water. They will not be harmed by a splash or two, but do not put them underwater to prevent the possibility of the paper beads soaking up water and expanding.
